Even though I struggle with finding companions and I can’t always make a show every year, I am still a member of the DMB Warehouse. It’s the official Fan Club of the Dave Matthews Band and I’ve been a member for almost 10 years.
When my membership comes up for renewal I don’t blink an eye- I always renew. Members gets great benefits: a pack of merchandise, access to ticket pre-sales, and and exclusive events and meet-ups. The best part are that the member pre-sales include a lottery system where older memberships receive priority. It’s a great system that rewards both members and loyal individuals that continue to renew.
On the other hand I recently let my membership in the Ben Folds fan club lapse. Even though members also get pre-sale ticket opportunities there wasn’t any incentive for me to remain loyal on a year-to-year basis. Maybe down the road if I feel like I’m going to start racking up Ben Folds shows I’ll rejoin and I’d receive the same benefits if I my membership was 10 days old or 10 years old.
A note for all you out there thinking about how to grow or maintain your community or network: make it worth it to not only be a member- but to stay a member.
